What is Reiki?

FAQ

What is Holy Fire® Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, natural form of energy healing that originated in Japan. It’s based on the idea that life force energy flows through all living beings—and when that energy is balanced and free-flowing, we feel more connected, healthy, and at peace.

Reiki supports the body’s natural healing process by channeling this energy through the practitioner’s hands, either through light touch or by hovering just above the body. It’s often experienced as calming, grounding, and deeply nurturing—a quiet return to your center.

Whether you’re drawn to Reiki for emotional healing, spiritual connection, or simply the peace it brings, it meets you exactly where you are.

Is Reiki or Holy Fire® Reiki a religion?

No. Reiki is spiritual but not religious. You don’t need to follow or change any beliefs to receive or practice Reiki.

The word “Holy” in Holy Fire® means whole and complete—not religious in nature.

What can I do with my Reiki training and certification?

Once certified, you’ll be able to offer Reiki in a variety of ways:

 • Self-Reiki to support your own healing, energy, and growth

 • Reiki for others, including loved ones, clients, and animals

• Volunteer in your community

• Distance Reiki, which allows you to send energy across time and space

 • Reiki for situations, such as goals, events, conversations, travel, food, water, emotional patterns, or even ancestral healing

 • Professional practice, if you choose to offer Reiki as a service or integrate it into work you already do. Please check local laws or licensing requirements in your region.

How does Reiki work?

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way. - reiki.org

What can Reiki be used for?

Reiki can help with relaxation, stress reduction, pain relief, improved sleep, and a general sense of well-being. Reiki can help boost immune function, accelerate healing and support the body's natural healing process. It can also help with emotional healing, spiritual growth, and personal development.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Anyone can benefit from Reiki. It is beneficial for people of all ages and backgrounds, including those that are pregnant and people with chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, injuries and stress-related issues. It’s also beneficial for animals of any species.

What should I wear to a Reiki session?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to relax and breathe deeply. You do not need to wear special clothing or remove any clothing for a Reiki session. You will remain fully clothed.

Can Reiki be done remotely?

Yes, Reiki can be done remotely. This is known as distance healing, and it is just as effective as an in-person session. The practitioner channels the Reiki energy to the recipient who may be in a different location.

What does a Reiki session look like?

Curious about what happens during an in-person Reiki session? Let me paint the picture for you!

Before the session begins, we’ll talk for a few minutes, creating a comfortable space for you to share any concerns, intentions, or questions you might have. This helps personalize the experience, ensuring it aligns perfectly with your needs.

Picture a serene space with soothing music, where you’re comfortably lying down, fully clothed, on a massage table. As a Reiki practitioner, I begin by gently placing my hands either lightly on or slightly above your body, following a sequence of positions to channel positive energy.

The hands-on technique involves a light touch on your body focusing on doing different areas including energy centers or chakras. It’s a gentle, warm sensation that many describe as calming, comforting, and deeply relaxing.

At times, I might use a hands-off approach, working within your energy field without physical contact. I’ll place my hands about 2-3 inches above your body. You might feel sensations like tingling, warmth, or a sense of energy flowing through you during these moments.

After the session, we’ll have another brief chat, allowing you to share your experience, ask any questions, or discuss any insights that arose during the session. Additionally, I’ll share any observations or experiences I may have had during the Reiki session.

Throughout the session, clients often experience a profound sense of peace, reduced stress, and an overall feeling of well-being. It’s a unique and personal journey for everyone, but the aim remains the same - to restore balance and promote healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Do I need any prior experience to take a Reiki class?

No prior experience is required for Reiki I & II classes—just an open mind and willingness to learn. All necessary training and energy placements (attunements) will be provided during the course.

Can I learn Reiki for personal use without starting a business?

Absolutely. Many students take Reiki training for personal use—whether to support their own wellness, help loved ones, or deepen their spiritual practice—without any intention of offering it professionally.
